Billboard on the Johannesburg Highway

“HIV POSITIVE GOT LIFE INSURANCE”

The above was a quote I saw from the highway and I found it so alarming that I decided to blog about it. Immediately after seeing this sign I thought to myself is this sign appropriate? If the goal of the advertisement was to get the attention of the driver then the mission was accomplished. I could not imagine seeing a sign like this in the United States. However, the HIV epidemic is not nearly as prevalent in the United States as it is here in South Africa. Recent statistics show that the HIV rate in South Africa has spread to nearly 25% of the population. Therefore, the life insurance advertisement like the one above may serve a strong purpose. Keeping the public informed that HIV will not disappear like the common flu is imperative. Additionally, the advertisement did a great job of reminding people who are infected that their relatives are also plagued by the deadly disease. The loved ones who survive have to deal with the financial, emotional, and economic pain caused by HIV.
